Unboxing Live 167: Elgato Thunderbolt Drive+

If you need an insanely fast external SSD drive for your Mac or PC, then look no further than the Elgato Thunderbolt Drive+. Despite the name, you can use this drive with either Thunderbolt or USB 3.0, and since it is an SSD with no moving parts, it's ridiculous fast with read and write speeds. I use it to do video editing directly off of for Final Cut Pro X, and it never skips a beat.

Today, I am going to be giving you a look at the Elgato Thunderbolt Drive Plus.

Hey Guys! Welcome to Unboxing Live. I’m Andru Edwards. And this is the show that brings you vicarious thrills through opening new gear.

And today we’ve got the Thunderbolt Drive Plus from Elgato. I will explain all about what makes this thing awesome. It’s fast. It’s great.

Before we do this, we just want to thank our sponsor, Monster. Monster products make headphones, speakers and check it out around my neck, the monster 24K headphones.

Elgato has outdone themselves with this drive, it supports USB 3 ports, USB 2, and it support Thunderbolt. All three connections are available from the same drive, which you do    not see with a lot of external hardrive. Usually, you have to pick one or the other but not here.

Portable, no moving parts, silent (which is good), and transfer speed go up to 420 megabytes per second.

So let’s go ahead and open it up, and show you what is in the box. So as we can see, small packaging, pretty non-descript power. It has portable (very light) which means you can take it with you. This is a 512 gigabyte model. They also make 256 gigabyte model as well.

Check this out, the Elgato even included a Thunderbolt cable. Most of the time when you buy a Thunderbolt device, the cables are not included because the cables could get very expensive, they can be up to $30. It has three cables as well.

So you have everything you need in the box. So let’s get started with using super fast Elgato Thunderbolt Drive Plus.

One other thing to notice, there is no power port, it gets all of its power from the Thunderbolt or the USB 3.0. And it has a server grade controller chip on the inside for the    accessing which means you are going to get high sustained performance with a very low failure rate.

As far as requirements in your operating system, you’re gonna need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later or on a PC, Windows 7 or later, Thunderbolt or you can use it with the USB 2.0. By the way, it would be much slower. It does comp reform at 4OS 10 so if you pick it up and you have a MAC, you are ready to roll right out of the box.

And that’s pretty much it. So much for pricing goes again, it’s available at 256 GB as well as the 512 GB model. That’s it for the Elgato Thunderbolt Drive Plus.

Thanks a lot for watching guys! Stay tuned for more tech news through GearLive.com. Thanks a lot for taking out Amazon Gadgets. I’m Andru Edwards.

You can pick up the Elgato Thunderbolt Drive+ now.
