Gear Live Gives Back 2008: Education Charity Drive

Alright, let’s take a break for just a moment away from the standard news fare. We know that you guys love the gadgets, gizmos, and consumer electronics just as much as we do. These expensive and cool toys are often a marvel when you break them down to the technology that drives them. That’s what makes what we do fun, and why we love the interaction we have with our readers. However, we want to focus a bit of attention on the young ones in our country who would be happy to have a calculator for use in class, and the teachers who work for districts that can’t afford things like projectors for use in their schools.
Gear Live has joined the 2008 DonorsChoose Blogger Challenge, and we have chosen eight great causes that are centered around getting some basic technology and literature into classrooms located in our local area, as well as some of the hardest areas still suffering the affects of Hurricanes Ike and Katrina. We’ve chosen eight causes that we thought touched on what we believed in, and you can take a look at them and choose which one(s) you want to help. Our goal is to raise $5,000 for the children of our nation. Just know that the money you donate will go directly to that specific teacher request - not into some big pot of money that is then doled out by the organization.
Some of the most expensive purchases for schools are consumer electronics. We believe that all children need to get acquainted with the tools of the future as they learn so they when they are ready to hit the workforce, they can succeed alongside their peers. Please, help us in assisting teachers, children, and schools in low-income areas get the tools they need to help their children excel.

You that 2G iPod touch that Apple was all excited about, being that it’s the thinnest iPod touch ever (despite being only the second one ever made)? We figured you guys might be interested in having us take a bunch of unboxing images of the one that just got delivered here to Gear Live HQ. Yeah, this thing is thin, and if you don’t already have a first-gen iPod touch, you should seriously look into this model if you’ve been waiting one. It’s a nice improvement over the original. Check out the rest of the images over at our iPod touch 2G unboxing gallery.

Alongside the news that the Zune 3.0 software has launched, Microsoft has also released a couple of new Zunes. Here, we are focusing specifically on the new Zune 120. Changes from last year’s Zune 80 are minimal, with everything being completely cosmetic in nature. As you will see, the Zune 120 features a glossy black front, as opposed to last year’s matte black, and the back of the Zune 120 is black, while the Zune 80 had a metallic aluminum finish. If you wanna get technical, then I should also point out that the Wi-Fi antenna is also now black, and the writing and etching on the back of the Zune 120 is white. Of course, we’ve got a full Zune 120 unboxing gallery for you to enjoy, so go check it out.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was, arguably, the biggest release in the PS3’s life cycle thus far. To commemorate the release, Konami worked with Sony on a special Limited Edition version of the Playstation 3 console. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one of the very, very rare Metal Gear Solid 4 Gun Metal Limited Edition PS3 units, and we have it here for your unboxing pleasure. As you will see, both the PS3 console and the included DualShock 3 controller are given the gunmetal treatment. We also have a bunch of special items packed in, which we go over as well.
All in all, we think this is a fantastic collectable for fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, the Playstation 3, or both. Unfortunately, we aren’t seeing them on sale anymore, so you may have to hit your favorite auction site if you want to grab one of these.

We were able to get our hands on one of the new HP TouchSmart computers recently, and were very impressed by what we saw - especially when compared to the original TouchSmart that we saw back at CES 2007. We unbox the new TouchSmart in this episode, showing off the new, sleek form factor, along with all the new wireless accessories that HP has designed to compliment the experience.
What we love most about it, aside from the cool touch screen implementation, is the fact that it is a full featured, powerful computer. Typically, all-in-one computers like these have been underpowered. Not so with the TouchSmart, which is chock-full of RAM (4GB), hard drive space (500 GB), 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS HD graphics card, and Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit edition. It even has an integrated ATSC & NTSC TV tuner with PVR and remote.
Check out the video for the full scoop on the new HP TouchSmart.
If you want to pick up one of your own, take a look at the HP TouchSmart premium version, or the standard HP TouchSmart computer.

We’ve been following the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones ever since we first got some hands-on (and ears-on) time with them back at CES. The Gear Live group that got to try them out included a few serious audiophiles, and we were thoroughly impressed by the sound that they were putting out, and this is when they were still in the development phase.
We just got a pair of the final production model, and early indications are that they are full of a bit more awesome than they were back then. We will hit you with a proper review soon, but for now, we wanted to get you a nice Beats unboxing gallery, chock full of unboxing shots. We’ve got over 30 images for you to chew on while you wait for these bad boys to launch on July 25th. If you want them, you will find them exclusively in Apple Stores and Best Buy, as well as over at BeatsByDre.com. They will run you $349.95, $50 less than they were announced for back at CES.
Also, in case you missed it, check out our Beats by Dr. Dre unboxing video.

We wanted to shout out the winners of the customized Gear Live iPhone giveaway that we held a couple of weeks ago. We let three winners walk away with a piece of the action, with the grand prize, of course, winning our orange painted iPhone.
The grand prize went to Kat. She gets the iPhone, an LRG T-shirt, a couple of Monster Cable accessories, and a few LRG Monster iPhone cases. Second place went to x1xtomx1x. He doesn’t get an iPhone or anything, but he does get a couple of the LRG Monster iPhone cases, the shirt, and the accessories. Third place went to Shan Gee, and he gets one less LRG case than x1 gets.
So there you have it, the end to another Gear Live contest. Stay tuned though, we still have a bunch of stuff that we plan on giving away to your readers. You know, like Wii Fit, Microsoft Zune, etc. In the meantime, be sure you are a Gear Live member.

The Beats by Dre headphones were originally announced at CES 2008, where we were able to get our first experience at listening to the headset. As we noted in our video back then, we were thoroughly impressed. The sound was killer, with fantastic bass. The headphones were well thought out, shipping with audio cables that fit into the original iPhone, and even including a cable that has a microphone on it so that you can take phone calls.
The Beats by Dr. Dre were conceived by Dr. Dre himself, and are mutually designed with Monster Cable. The headphones feature both a unique and futuristic style, as well as newly developed sonic technologies, which result in outstanding performance.
In this episode, we unbox the Beats by Dr. Dre. Included in the box are the headphones themselves, a red audio cable (which fits into the original iPhone), a customized iSoniTalk cable (which also fits into the iPhone, and has a microphone so that you can use the Beats to talk on the phone), cleaning cloth, a studio jack, and protective carrying case.
You can find them soon for $349.95, which is $50 less than they were originally announced for.
